Meet Laura, one of our first year students on the BSc (hons) Occupational Therapy course, starting her second year in September.
Representative club: Canterbury HC and CCSU Hockey
Subject studied: BSc (hons) Occupational Therapy
Best achievement to date: Playing for the Ireland U16s against Scotland has to be my best achievement but winning the Munster Senior A Cup with my school and the Junior Interprovincial Tournament are achievements that I will always be proud of.
Role model: I am inspired by the level of commitment, dedication and passion that any elite athlete has for their sport. Maria Sharapova is a big sporting role model for me since watching her win Wimbledon in 2004. Irish International hockey players like David and Conor Harte, John Jermyn, Emer Cregan, Naomi Carroll, Karen Bateman and Yvonne O’Byrne are all hockey role models for me. Closer to home my Mom and Dad have driven me to training sessions all over the country and pushed me to improve and believe in myself. And final,y Caroline McHugh, who has coached me since I was able to hold a hockey stick and is always there for advice and constructive criticism.
Greatest ambition: My aim for the next three years is to continue playing for Christ Church and Canterbury HC. I am currently working hard to get onto the training squad for Canterbury Ladies 1st XI with a view to compete for a starting position on the team. On more of a long term basis, I would like to play for the Irish Senior Ladies Team.
Most exciting experience: A few years back I travelled to Holland with my school team and Germany with the Irish U 16 team in the same month. They were both great opportunities for me to receive coaching from incredible people and to experience how hockey is played in countries where it is a professional sport. I also once received one to one drag flicking training with John Jermyn who was drag flicking for the Ireland Team at the time.
